I've recently joined a new company and once again, get to take up the fight for using Macs in the research computing group. As usual, argument #1 is that they don't have the security tools for another OS.

This company issues corporate iPhones locked down with the appropriate profiles and such. Are (or will) those same security features be used by Big Sur/M1 MacBooks? That could be a nice way to enable corporate IT management of Macs in the workplace.

The IT team at your employer could have been managing Macs with profiles already. That they haven't done so is just a choice they've made, and there's not much that changes in that respect with the move to the M1 Macs.
