so I create a bunch of users in server5.12 that shall have access to some directories on a macos12.4 mac mini.

I set an initial password, that i want users to change at first login.

when checking the 'require password change at next login'-checkbox in the 'change password'-window, it does not work, user is not asked to change pw.

when I set 'password must be reset on first user login' in the 'edit password policy'-window, it does not work either, user is not asked to change pw.

how can I invoke change-password dialog for the user?
thank you.

Hey. Sorry, gave up Server as server years ago. Most folks have as well...so you may not find many Server gurus out there. Hopefully, somebody can weigh in.

Curious...are the user accounts local on the server, or OD users?

Good luck managing users with DHCP server.
😋

been playing with synology but not liking it much.

what alternatives do you recommend. what did you switch to?

if linux, can you elaborate?
I am quite ignorant of linux, are there any good sources
for noobs on how to quickly set up a simple fileserver?

are there any decent graphical user interfaces for server and user management & stuff?

DHCP is a network device protocol to manage IP addresses...not to manage users. Flint is exactly right, one needs a directory service to manage users.

Mac Server: Open Directory
Win Server: Active Directory
Synology: 2 options (both based on open-source enterprise tools):

...What don't you like about the Synology?

They have (arguably) the best interface and features out there in the home server/NAS world, so most other options will be a longer learning curve.

synology is a black box.

does anyone know, how is user mgmt done on linux: smb-server or do I need some LDAP thingy on top of that?
