So when i plugged in my new Taurus Raid External HD with a 250GB Seagate and a 750GB Samsung i thought i had been transported to an airport.

It turns out is is just the fan.

Does anyone else have this box. Do you use the fan. Can i turn it off?

It is raised on legs, made of Aluminum and has ventilation holes front and back. Do you think i'll be safe to turn the fan off? It is too annoyingly loud to have on all the time. My iTunes drowns it out a bit, but it's still always 'there' in the background.

What to do?

PS - It's this model here (look at how it's raised and has ventilation) http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hddmulti/taurus/pdd_raid

The fan is spinning at 4200rpm apparently

Can i maybe replace it with a super quiet one?

well i've gone for it and detached the fan.

The box is a bit quieter now (it is still making a bit of noise, though i can tolerate it with music/video playing)

I'm about to put it through its paces, running 3 hours of video and hope it will run cool enough after that.

It really should. It is raised up, it's in Aluminum casing and the other HD is unmounted.

fingers crossed!
