MacPro "Don´t buy"? But when ....?

Hello friends,
sorry to bother you with a question that is not that sexy - but I wonder if there will be a new MacPro 2015 or not this or maybe never ever. I have a mid 2010 12 core MacPro 2,66 with 64Ram and dream of the new one because of it´s Thunderbolt possibilities - especially for making music with huge Sample libraries and plan to edit 4K video from next year on. But the present MacPro processor speed bothers me a bit because my 2010 with 2,66 is a bit slow for streaming too - even with SSDs. And I hate the idea to get a PC.
But when will come the new MacPro and: will there be an update?
Sorry if this qustions was asked before...

What about upgrading those CPUs to the 3.46GHz Xeon X5690 ?
And what interest do you have in thunderbolt, you can put like 6 HDD/SSD in your Mac and have Audio cards on your PCIe lanes :)
 
A lot of people here say by first quarter of 2016. I am hoping it doesn't take that long, since it will be the longest refresh ever.

Check the threads on using 3.4GHz 12-core? SM951(s) or 1TB PCIe-SSD blade (or two) Said you are using SSDs but even on SATA III controller, the upgrade makes a difference.

The nMP still seems like a nitch as for what it is ideal for (yes, small, quit) but the cost? stuck with D500?

The 5,1 came with 2.8 quad - does this mean you have a 2009 4,1 instead?

The poster said 2.66 12 core i.e. a pair of 5650's which was available in 2010
 
Thank you for your answers - I know there are so many posts about that - but are all of you sure that there will BE a new MacPro?

I was in a similar position. I was using a 2012 Mac Mini server and decided to purchase a 2012 Mac Pro instead of the nMP. I use it for music production and just upgraded my sample library from a single Samsung 1 Tb 850 Pro SSD (it was nearly full) to a pair in a raid 0 array. Both SSDs are mounted an a PCI card and this thing screams!

I purchased it with dual 3.3 6-core chips and 36 GB of memory. I suggest going with SSDs for your samples and perhaps upgrading the chips after seeing the difference SSDs make in loading samples.

I use Logic X and see no need to upgrade for several years.

Well in 2016 Q2/Q3 we'll have new Xeon CPUs (Skylake). So if Intel is not behind on schedule there will be new Mac Pros around that time.
The reason as to why the current Mac Pros aren't updated is because Intel's Xeon product cycle is horribly slow...

Haswell-EP has been shipping in volume for at least seven months. Perhaps it is Apple's upgrade schedule that is horribly slow?
 
The benefit of using Haswell isn't big enough.
Skylake will introduce TB3 and performance improvements we haven't seen in nearly a decade, so it kindah makes sense not to put in new Xeons.
As for the GPUs I dont understand why they didn't upgrade them because they're becoming quite out of date...

If anyone was sure, it would be news.

My wild guess is end of 2015 or early 2016. The new Xeons will be out, TB3 will be out, and there will have been enough time to convert AMD's current generation of video cards into Apple's very custom Mac Pro GPU boards.

Sometimes hardware starts to leak in the OS X beta updates, but that is a 2-3 months in advance thing. There are strong hints at a 4k iMac in the OS X 10.11 beta. There were "Retina" indicators before retina MBPs. etc.

Right now I don't recall there being any early Mac Pro specific indicators floating around in the OS betas.

TB3 isn't hard coupled to Skylake. They happen to be releasing around the same time and the chipset associated with mainstream Gen 6 (Skylake ) CPU+GPUs also provides more PCIe v3 lanes which TB3 can quickly consume. It would be harder to fit TBv3 into the most common mainstream desktop/laptop designs without Skylake, but it isn't impossible.

It would be odd for Apple to quit the Mac Pro after

1. They made a big deal about the new form factor and "can't innovate my ass... " statements.

2. They were back ordered for 3-4 months when the product came out. (i.e., people were buying them in numbers ).

When Apple makes a product they think is very good and lots of people buy it ..... there is not really good examples where Apple walks away from that market in the short term. If the number of systems bought on a refresh drops off to a relatively low trickle, yes.

It appears the Mac Pro is more of a "hobby" system for Apple. They'll do an update every couple of years when just about everything in it is out of date. That matches up with the buyers in this segment who don't buy systems very often either.
The lack of an upgrade for the Mac Pro isn't a good indicator that they have "given up" on the Mac Pro. It is more so an indicator that they aren't in a hurry (e.g., must update every 12 months or less ).

There is no guarantee that there will be a future Mac Pro, but there is also no guarantee that there will be a future Apple either.

If a new Mac Pro is a very good fit for your workflow ( has performance and decent coupling to I/O devices you need to interface with. Also, it is clear how it would produce a return on investment), then buy it. Playing the "timing" game with the rumor guides aren't really as important. Actually need it ... then buy it. If it is in the "it would be nice" category then you can wait or look at minor upgrades ( if the latter doesn't eat your "seed corn" money for future systems purchase).

Don't think they'd bother with the hassle of doing so.
They always generally have preferred to wait until all the right components were available :3

I really would like to see PCIe expandability but that's just me dreaming !
Don't know where I'dd go after my MacPro is end of life.
I love macs but I'll probably go Linux for my desktop if they're gonna continue locking hardware and software down :/

I'm afraid that they will continue with locking.... they 're really loving it.:(
 
I'd have thought they'd wait until they're able to do single-cable 5k, which as far as I can remember needs displayport 1.3, I'd guess over TB3. Wouldn't surprise me if a new 5K Apple Display made an appearance at that point too - panel prices should have come down sufficiently for it not to be ridiculous (particularly given how cheap the new 5K iMac is)

Processor and GPU choices will be interesting - I'd like to see one of the 18-core Xeons as a BTO.
 
Dual cpu and dual fury x would be a dope upgrade. 6usbc/T3 and you got me preordering. Throw dual 980tis and Apple is on top of the world

Thankfully they still work well for pro apps, and if you're able to crossfire them in Windows they will still surpass most single high end cards. Not an excuse for obsolescence, but one can still get by...
