G'day,

I am moving on from my MacPro5,1 2.8Ghz Quad to a Mac mini, and as a bit of a "testing the waters", have offered the MacPro to my 14yo son to try and turn into a gaming PC.

I have never owned a PC... (Kinda feel like I did something wrong with him... sob sob) I did tinker with one for my father in law years ago but mostly just got frustrated.

He will be inheriting:
MacPro5,1
Pioneer BluRay
500GB SSD
Maybe a 1 or 2 TB spinner

He's going to need:
A monitor
Better graphics card (has stock only)
Better processor
Probaby More RAM (only has 8GB)

So far he's saved around $250AU.

Looking on eBay, I'm seeing plenty of 2nd hand monitors for around $100, some of which claim to be gaming monitors, but I have no idea what kind of specs to be looking at beyond resolution. Is 5ms good? 144hz?

How complicated will it be installing Windows? If he's never going to boot into MacOS, do we need Bootcamp? Will Windows 11 run on a MacPro5,1, or are we limited to 10?

Thanks for any help ya'll can offer!

Cheers

Don’t waste your time or money. It will never be a gaming PC with or without Bootcamp unless you run the most basic games.
