For this week’s giveaway, we’ve teamed up with Aukey to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win an Omnia 65W USB-C power adapter from Aukey, either with two USB-C ports or a USB-C port and a USB-A port.

Aukey makes a whole range of power adapters, wireless chargers, and power banks for Apple devices, and the Omnia 65W 2-port wall chargers are some of the company’s newest offerings, able to charge the 13-inch MacBook Pro, a MacBook Air, an iPad Pro, or an iPhone or standard iPad with a USB-C to Lightning cable.

Using the aforementioned USB-C to Lightning cable, the USB-C power adapters can fast charge a compatible iPhone, providing 50 percent charge in 30 minutes. For those who have mostly USB-C devices the version with two USB-C ports (PA-B4) is a solid choice, while those that have a mix of USB-C and USB-A devices might find the version with USB-C and USB-A ports (PA-B3) more useful.

When the top USB-C port is used alone on either charger, it can output up to 65W, and when both ports are in use, it offers 45W of power for charging a laptop device.

Design wise, these are simple black power adapters that use gallium nitride (GaN) technology to keep the size compact and smaller than Apple’s standard chargers. Aukey says that the Omnia chargers are 50 percent smaller and lighter than Apple's 61W power adapter.

Each charger includes retractable prongs, making it ideal for bringing when traveling, and there’s subtle Aukey branding plus an LED light that lets you know when the power adapter is receiving power. According to Aukey, there are multiple safeguards to protect devices when charging to prevent excessive current, overheating, and overcharging.

We've come a long way regarding electronics in the last decade.
I see this on a daily basis, Power electronics got smaller and smaller.
Especially in Industrial electronics, if you see how much power delivery goes into smaller and smaller casings, it just boggles my mind.

Look at this charger, it's 50% smaller than Apples original one, and even that isn't that big either.

Just went and bought one from Amazon Canada. Was on sale so why not. Now I don't have to take my iPhone and MBP chargers when travelling with me since they both have different cable types... Small, all in one is perfect and charge both at the same time. Nice!

How much does this retail for?
Usually it is listed with the article.
Ah, the link to amazon is on the name of the product. It would still be nice to spell it out.

What now needs to change is the design... it can be larger, but needs to be slimmer... (Like the Anker PowerPort Atom III Slim). Having a slim laptop bag that has a huge bulge just because of the charger is really not state of the art IMHO...

It's quite a bit bigger.
I checked the item out even before you posted your comment, *the Anker is 15% smaller, *the Aukey is 50% smaller.
* Compared to Apples own charger

Pay less but increase in size.
Just wait a bit more, eventually these will be ubiquitous, prices will go down.
€50 for a high power charger isn't that bad currently, they will get cheaper in time, in fact you can get much cheaper GaN chargers on amazon, but quality might be an issue, I for one would not trust cheap Chinese chargers.

There is no EU plug version yet unfortunately. Looks good, very smart way to advertise. I might buy it to replace my old school (dell) laptop charger. btw I wonder when Apple will switch completely to GAN chargers, it seems like they just give market to 3rd party..

FTFY
If you have aspirations to be more than a parochial North American site with local readers, you have to step up your game. Thank you.

Maybe in volume, but what matters is thickness:

The Anker PowerPort Atom III Slim fits easily, an iPad charger or a US iPhone adapter not so much.

My condolences to the UK... their ridicolous socket would require a foldable plug to be anywhere near compact...

As for the price, a good USB-C charger will likelay alway cost its wattage in €/$. They are a lot more complex than regular chargers as they need to be able to provide multiple voltages at quite high amperage:
  • 2.4A @ 5V
  • 3A @ 9V
  • 3A @ 15V
  • 2,25A @ 20V
Personally I would not buy a cheap charger just to risk frying the laptop or tablet... Saving money on the PSU was always stupid...

I agree, our plugs are way to big for the 21century. However...I've got a Spark practice amp for my guitar. Works fine for me but the user forums are full of complaints from american users who are struggling with the very loud hum coming from the amp. The solution for most is to drill a hole in the case and attach a grounding wire. Can't see the problem myself - must be our third pin? ;-)

Totally agree with your comment about cheap PSU's and chargers. That includes the manufactures. Back in the day we always used to by LaCie external drives (solid case, good ventilation, usually quality mechanisms inside). The power supplies were rubbish. We used to buy 3rd party quality psu's and leave the LaCie ones in the box for emergency spares!

Prices have been decreasing since January for the Anker USB C Charger, 60W, PowerPort Atom ||| (18-month warranty).
This charger has the USB-C port as well as the USB-A port.
