For this week's giveaway, we've teamed up with Arlo to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win an Arlo Pro 3 camera system that comes with two cameras and an Arlo SmartHub base station.

Priced at $499.99 for the two camera kit, the Arlo Pro 3 includes two wire-free cameras that can be placed anywhere inside or outside the home, both of which are controlled by the HomeKit-connected hub. More cameras can be added in the future for a whole-home security system, and setup is as simple and straightforward as any other HomeKit product.

The Arlo Pro 3 features a 2K ultra high definition resolution with a wide 160-degree viewing angle that allows for full visibility of an entire room or outdoor area. The camera has a six month battery life so there's no need to charge it regularly.

There's an integrated spotlight that you can set to come on to scare off would-be intruders, along with a loud siren sound. Both of these features can be set to be activated with motion or manually. You can also talk to people through the camera using two-way audio capabilities.

For when it's dark, there's a built-in night mode that displays full color night vision, a useful feature as many other similar cameras have a night mode that's just black and white. The Arlo Pro 3 cameras can be mounted anywhere with a magnetic mount, and there's also an included weatherproof magnetic charging cable. The weather-resistant camera design allows the Arlo Pro 3 to withstand heat, cold, rain, and sunlight.

The Arlo cameras come with a three free month Arlo Smart trial, which provides personalized notifications, advanced people detection, cloud activity zones, and offers a 30-day recording history. Arlo's plans start at $2.99 per month for a single camera.

I doubt this one supports HomeKit Secure Video.
Have had an Arlo Pro 2 for some time and was very disappointed. You could literally do NOTHING in HomeKit besides watching the stream. No on/off, no activity alert. So you depend on their cloud, their location-tracking of your iPhone and their pricing for additional festures.
 
That these things continue to to sell surprises me. if you're looking to see who's outside, or, if a package showed up, they might be OK. But, for security... Not so much. First problem is the batteries - going up and down ladders year round is not likely to be safe or convenient - sort of like those smoke detector batteries always failing at 2 a.m. or, when you left town for a week. Second problem is related to the first - the tendency would be to place them where they are easy to get to - which is good for bad guys too. Then there's the monitoring of any tampering that can take place; I've installed many systems were if you mess with the wiring, an alarm goes off - that you can't sleep through or ignore. Etc. If I won these, I'd probably leave them in the box and get rid of them. Just not, in the long run, much worth it to me. If you win 'em, good luck to you. I've seen them in the field... Not impressed beyond the slick marketing. Just saying...

Couldn't agree more. I sold my entire Arlo Pro 3 system and bought EufyCams. And for less than half the price because Arlo's are so overpriced!

The only thing I disagree with is EufyCam's aren't identical to Arlo, they are far superior!

Thanks for the suggestion. These Arlo Pro 3 systems look like you are paying a premium for the resolution bump. Surprised everyone doesn't do solar instead of battery powered.

Eufy has 2k cameras as well. But neither 4K nor 2k resolutions matter if you use HomeKit Secure Video because HomeKit is limited to 1080p regardless unfortunately.
 
Nice! Having just setup a Homepod Mini I'd love to have this to monitor my pet lizard and home.
More for my pet. I suspect she's been having parties ;)
 
I tried the earlier version and returned it to Best Buy. FATAL FLAW - and looks like they maintained the design with the current version. The alarm is built into the control module - not a separate unit to be mounted anywhere of your choice. The alarm sounds, the intended response is RUN. The actual response is - the heart of the system is located here and there is a big STOP button on top to turn off the alarm. Worse, you are now in the home's technology central with other computers, routers to steal as the unit itself (at least prior generation) had to be hardwired (ethernet cable) to router, not wireless, which limited its location. The only "wireless" is the hub's communication with the cameras.
 
Much like Ring devices, the flaw is in IoT reliance. That AWS outage a week or so ago? That took out Ring devices for nearly a day. Not to say it happened, but a smart and enterprising thief could have taken advantage of that. I much prefer local link, closed security devices over something requiring not only a subscription, but reliance on a vendor for reliability.

Can you attach an HD to the hub of the EufyCam, like you can with the Arlo?
