Available for $500, the Explorer 500 is Jackery's mid-range power station with a 518 watt-hour lithium-ion battery. Jackery also makes a range of larger and smaller batteries to meet various needs.

Steep price, but I'd love to have one of these during hurricane season when our power gets knocked out. Would keep us from constantly needing to run our generator.
 
Wrong socket, but, besides not qualifying in general, shipping this thing do Europe would probably double the price. I have to say, though, that through the virtue of being total overkill for charging your phone, it looks pretty awesome.

It's a decent price for 500 watt-hours of capacity, and its features. You could make your own, but a decent LiFePO4 battery alone will cost around $500. And then you need a 500 watt sine wave output inverter, a charger, etc.

Don't know if Jackery uses LiFePO4 batteries (preferred) or regular Li-ion - there are pros/cons to each.

The Ac outlet I needed. Good for camping, emergencies, etc. I charge it with my car's 12v lighter socket. Put that to use, as it's pretty useless.

12” MacBook as a benchmark? Either that’s a terribly out of date reference, or this is a rumor all its own…
 
I have one of these, they are great. Due to an ice storm, I went about 10 days without power. I used it to keep a few lights on and to charge the phones and iPads until the local cell towers went down. (Did you know, after a long enough outage, cable internet and even the cell towers go down.) You can also get a rather large solar panel to top the charge off. Because the display shows how many amps the device is charging, you can even tilt the panel to get the best possible charge during the day.

Keep thinking of these when I head back to the Virginia home. I'm always afraid that the power will go out for more than a few hours eventually. Last winter it was off about 5 hours. *fingers crossed*

I’ve wanted one of these for a while. Harbor Freight sells them now and I’m always tempted but can’t justify the price. Great giveaway though, MacRumors!

Caught my attention as well. Listing the least power hungry Macbook is an easy way to bolster charging cycles numbers though. Probably they simply reckon that not everyone will note the difference.
