would you pay if Macrumors was a paid subscription

Yes. Because I do. You can pay to get an add free version, and access to the private forum.
You can also get a cool user title!

Yes, I do pay an annual subscription.

It's a bit tricky in the context of this hypothetical situation because it would totally change the dynamics of the entire board. A pay requirement might chase off 90% of the users who I'm sure contribute to your enjoyment of this site. :)

It would likely shake out a lot of people from the Politics forum..

Personally, no, I wouldn't pay. Macrumors is a great source of information, but I can live without Cooks Apple, so it wouldn't be a big loss for me long term.

I was unaware or forgot about the subscription of MR.

I will happily pay towards running and upkeep of MR and forums.
It has helped me no end so $25 USD a year well worth it.

At the moment, the payment is entirely voluntary and optional.

I pay it because I like MR, I have derived a lot of enjoyment and pleasure from participation in the forums, and I have learned a lot, too. Besides, $25 is not too much to ask, and I am happy to pay for it.

Now, if this payment to be a part of the forum was to be compulsory rather than voluntary, and whether I would choose to remain member under those conditions, is something to which I have given no thought as yet.

Right, which was the entire point of my post :)

(and I suspect the context of the OP / poll)

Ah, I assumed that the OP hadn't realised that there is a section of the forum for which one pays in order to have access, rather than was simply asking whether we would still remain members if membership was contingent upon payment of a subscription.

Re the 'private' section of the forum, I must say that I rather like the tone of the place; it is very agreeable, and civilised and a most pleasant place to visit.

I hate subscriptions of any kind. To be honest, if I subscribed to Amazon Prime, I would save hundreds of dollars a year, but I won't. It is principle. If MR goes subscription, I would leave.

Chasing off 90% of the users sounds pretty nice, actually.

I'm not sure what the conversation is like in the private forums, but it would be quite nice if there was a "subscribers only" filter on the regular forums that could act like a preset ignore list. And maybe a "subscribers and whitelisted plebes" filter.

I wouldn't, and I would imagine that most of the people who say that they would would change their mind once the quality of help that you can get on the site goes down from 90% of users leaving.

Great idea! If I could pay in bananas, I'd do that. Because who doesn't need more bananas?

But since there isn't a BananaCard, nor a BananaPal service, I'm not sure. I guess it depends on the conversion rate from bananas to quatloos, or whatever silly currency the guardians accept.

What an odd comment. You make a dig at prsi and conservatives I’m assuming.

I believe you assumed unbelievably wrong :)

I'd say the post was just suggesting areas peripheral to the core topic of this technology site - like the political sub-forum - would probably not attract +anyone+ if there was a paywall.

How on earth do you tie in my comment with conservatives?

I have by far most of my posts outside of PRSI, and I base my comment on not wanting to pay, on that. Which is also what I pointed out in my post, but which you neglected to quote, so to suit your agenda I assume. And why my post was a dig, I have no idea? It is merely a fact.

If it is of any conciliation, I find your post as weird as you find mine I guess.

Exactly. That sub-forum is the only one which is completely filled with threads not pertaining to the core of this site.

Yep, I’d pay to read and participate in the forums but not for those articles.

The private forums worth it? (Curious as to what the point is?)
Lot of people there?
