Macword 2008 - dashes between words

My word program used to automatically blend two dashes between words into a single, long dash after I added the next word. Suddenly, it no longer does that for me in a manuscript and I have found no way to control that particular action. Double dashes between words stay that way.
Would appreciate any advice!
