I keep checking the Apple store to see if this thing is available to order, since it's the main thing that tempted me to buy a new iPad, and I noticed that on the UK store the date has just changed to "later". US store still says May but I have my doubts. Why not release the big new accessory alongside the iPad if it's actually ready to go?

One reason for not releasing it, is a tried & true thing known as double dipping. Why release it now, when it could impact sales of regular smart folio sales? Release new product with standard expected case that many buy with the product, then a few months release a very desired product. Two possible sales instead of one. It's why I believe some case makers will release a case in any color but black initially, because they know black is more in demand. Release one color for the impatient, release black later for everyone else.

I don’t think that’s happening here, given how prominently the keyboard is featured on iPad Pro marketing. I bought it to replace my ageing MacBook Pro - my next computer isn’t a computer.

My guess is either it’s lockdown-related supply issues (best case scenario) or they were planning on working right up to the wire to fix issues with what looks like an impossibly flimsy hinge, and they’re unable to complete on time for understandable reasons.

Fingers crossed it launches more or less on schedule and doesn’t do an AirPower on us. Even without any trade shows or events happening, I find it strange that no “influencers” seem to have got their hands on this yet.

I'd respectfully disagree based on the history of companies with some products & my own jadedness. I am specifically looking at you Otterbox with your Symmetry cases for the 2018 iPad Pros 12.9 that only came in grey initially, only to come out a month or two later in the much demanded black that is pretty much now the standard.

But they could have done that the other way round by not making it compatible with the 2018 model, thereby getting more sales of iPads rather than keyboards.

This is very frustrating, albeit slightly less-so given many of us are working from home full time and can get away with using a normal keyboard and trackpad with it. I also suspect it’s just down to the current pandemic and them working out how many they can actually produce by what date and for what country etc.

They could have, but with a less than inspiring new iPad, where's the hype?

The hype is in the new keyboard that works with this new iPad, the previous one, and probably the next.

Why let that go by, when you want to keep the iPP fresh in minds?

Literally count the number of topics started by people in the iPad accessories forum. Every day there seems to be new post by someone asking any of us about a product that isn't out yet, that no one out of Apple it seems have seen. Yet they want to ask about weight, orientations, texture, and other specifics. I'd argue there's more positive hype about this keyboard then there's been about the new iPad Pro itself.

All due to a little wait time, ...which we all know Apple fans loooooovvveeee. ;)

For a third-party manufacturer like Otterbox, sure, but it seems like a bit of a small-time move for a company like Apple. And this isn’t just a case, it’s the first thing you see when you look at the 2020 iPads on the Apple site. A new direction for iPad as a viable do-everything computer.

I do like the new iPad, it’s far better than the first gen Air that I passed on to a family member for FaceTime purposes, but I worry I may have jumped the gun a bit by already buying a word processor for it and passing up the chance to get a new MacBook. The keyboard folio cases don’t interest me at all.

It can seem like a small time move to you. The question to ask though is how many smart folios do you think Apple moves with an initial iPad purchases though? I'd guess it's a fair amount. Why cannibalize ANY of those sales? Apple is a business after all, they aren't about to leave money on the table, when they could bring those same customers back to the table with a more advanced case.

I really wish they would have released it when the new Pro’s came out. Really dumb move. Now you are forced to buy the Gen 4 Smart Keyboard and then get the Magic in May or buy nothing and wait for it to come out.

I want the Magic Keyboard, but definitely don’t need the Smart Keyboard and the Magic Keyboard, plus that is a ton of money. It is so much easier to type with one of those keyboards.

It’s just not a great situation for potential buyers of a new laptop/iPad at the moment - no idea when the Smart Keyboard will be available... New Macbook Air is available but has longer than normal shipping times... still no 13” MBP with a scissor keyboard....

So if you do need a device like this, what do you do?

Give Apple your money for a smart folio keyboard like they suggest on their website.

Or do what many of us have already done. 1. Scour Amazon for a cheaper alternative or hit up Logitech. Or 2. Use any old case, link any old bluetooth keyboard you already have ( if you have one that is lying around ), and have a party. There's quite a few posts of people using Logitech small BT keyboards, third party alternative cases, and more. It's a holdover until the keyboard comes out. Or the alternative is wait to buy your iPP along with the new keyboard.

I myself just before the new keyboard was announced got one of these, to live the mechanical keyboard life inexpensively with my iPP.

It will tide me over until the time comes to decide if I want to spend 7X it's price for the new keyboard.
Note: I do have a Magic Trackpad, I just hadn't hooked it up, because this was before the new IOS release.

Mind you, this is coming from someone who's had an iPP since the first, so I'm used to not having this supposedly magic keyboard. So waiting a little longer to get one isn't a big deal, I've adapted.

We just make do. Apple does what it wants to do, for it's own reasons, we just decide if we want the products they offer when it's made available.

I found a few pics of my earlier options with keyboards.

The search for the perfect iPP keyboard may never end for some of us, not even with this supposed magic one. 🤪

I agree and I’ve been using an old magic keyboard and trackpad this week which I’ve been very impressed with. I love al the different options you’ve gone through.

The big thing about the Magic Keyboard for me is the ability to use it in the traditional laptop form factor, particularly as I need a mouse for some of the work I do for clients over Citrix. The longer lockdown goes-on, the more I’m hating sitting at a desk, so am just getting impatient 😀

Nice! I was thinking of using my iMac spare Bluetooth Keyboard while waiting for Magic Keyboard. Any ideas on how standup the iPad though? Still will miss the original Apple iPad Pro keyboard. That is just easy...

Any case for the iPP will stand up horizontally.

If you want vertical, you'll need a stand. I've used the Supcase for the iMac look.
That's the stand you see in the pics with Brydge keyboard separated, and the mechanical keyboard.

If you don't mind the weight, the Brydge Keyboards are a great option. Some don't like the keyboards feel, but you can try it out and return it if you don't care for it. I really came to like it because since it's BT you can separate it and put your iPP up & down. It's something they don't advertise but is a great option not possible with using the connectors. The weight & the effort taking the iPP in & out of the clips can be a turn off though.

If you're going for appearances, I've used a stand from the Container Store to replicate the stand from the Apple stores. That's the one in the picture with the great Logitech keyboard, which should always be considered a go to.

If you are an artist & ever used a wacom product, you know about this stand which they have the nerve to often sell separately. You can buy an all metal version which is sturdy as heck, and makes a great easel.

I love this stand!

There are others that iPP users on Youtube stress, but these are the ones I've used myself.

Thanks. Yeah - right now don’t want to spend the money on anything extra, except the Magic Keyboard when it comes out. Just trying to think of a homemade solution I could use with my Apple Bluetooth Keyboard. :)

Thank God! Another yahoo like me who has way too many keyboards and just as many stands. And then there are cases and bags ... I could probably fit out an entire office group with accessories.

It used to pop up when shopping for items for my iPad Pro. It doesn’t show up that way anymore. Now you have to search for it by name.
Still under accessories for my IPP 2018. I have to click on keyboards, but that’s the way it has been since announced. Still says available in May. Honestly the only material item I’m excited about these days!
