I have had the Magic keyboard for a couple of weeks, however I notice that the keyboard does not dim when the iPad becomes idol or when I close the iPad and put in my backpack.

Is this a problem with mine or do other people have this problem?

I had this issue happen to me once. I removed the ipad and it began to work expectedly. It may be a bug Apple needs to address.

I can confirm my keyboard backlight likes to stay on all the time. If fixes itself if I remove the keyboard and snap it back on. However, the next day it will do the same issue. And it's a bit of a sneaky problem because I close the iPad into the keyboard when not in use, but the lights are still on.

No way to know if it's a hardware or software issue. I think I'll wait for a couple more iPadOS updates to see if they address it. If not, I'm asking for an exchange.

I believe it’s software related. It happened to me also a day or so after the 13.5 update. Had not happened before. pulling the ipad off the keyboard and reattaching did correct it but I restarted the ipad just to be sure. Haven’t had it happen since. But I can imagine, especially for those that have the backlighting set low, that this could be the cause of some of the complaints of increased battery usage. If you didn’t realize the backlighting was on and shut the case for the day or night your battery would definitely drain.

i did notice that after 13.5 it takes about 28-30 seconds with no interaction with either the keyboard or ipad that the backlighting turns off. Prior to 13.5 it took only about 5 seconds or so for mine to turn off.
