magic mouse and safari in external display

My magic mouse seems to lose focus in safari in the external display. When I click on a link in a page instead of opening the link in the current tab a new tab is opened to open the link. My current mouse settings are:
secondary click right
scroll with momentum
screen zoom
two finger swipe.

Any ideas?

Do you have middle click enabled using programs such as BetterTouchTool or MagicPrefs? If so, middle click opens up the link in a new tab by default in Safari
