I had started a thread here like 18 months ago about this, and over time, a few more people chimed in who had experienced this problem... but we've never been able to find a fix.
When Lion came out, I was hopeful the problem would be cured. Alas, it hasn't been. It's better, but not gone.
The good news is that I can now reproduce it!! And I've proved, at least I think I have, that it's a software issue. I had started thinking it was a hardware flaw in the Magic Mouse, but now I don't think so anymore.
If you have a Magic Mouse and use Thunderbird, try this.
My layout is set to "vertical" where my folders and stuff are on the left side, then I have my message list, and to the right of that is the "preview" pane.
Move your pointer into the folders area. It does NOT need to be "tall" enough to be scrollable, it doesn't matter. It would help though if your message list is.
In the folder view, scroll down, then up. Like I said, even if it doen't scroll, just drag your finger down and then back up as if it was scrollable. Now, move the mouse into the message ist. Did it just scroll upward? If not, try it again. It does it for me two out of every three tries.
Once you're up in the messages more (meaning not at the top or bottom of the list), you can do it the other way too... scroll up then down, move the mouse right and see it scroll down. You can do the opposite too if your folders list is long enough to scroll... go up/down (or down/up) in the message listing, then move left tot he folders list and it'll scroll.
But wait, it gets better!
Now, assuming you're on a MacBook of some sort, use the trackpad and move the cursor into the folder list area and scroll up/down with it (two fingers up/down). Now use the Magic Mouse to move the pointer into the message list. It just scrolled didn't it? It did for me! Do it a few more times. It'd almost be fun if it wasn't so freakin' annoying.
But there's my reproduction of it. I still get the weird scrolling left/right too and up/down in other apps... web browsers, Eclipse, etc. But Thunderbird is what has allowed me to reproduce it.
Anybody else able to do this?
Rob
