Hi.
I've read quite a few reports of people getting frustrated with this online, but as yet I've not found a solution.
I bought a second hand trackpad 2 and I have connected it to my MacBook Pro (Monterey 12.7.6) with the lightning cable. That works fine, but it drops the connection when I unplug it.
I've tried restarting my computer, adding trackpad in system prefs while it's plugged in, and turning the trackpad off and then on again 5 times (as recommended on one other webpage), turning it off, hitting 'set up bluetooth trackpad in prefs then quickly turning it on..... but no joy.
Anyone think of any other thing I may not know of?
Thanks !!

do you have BT turned on on your MBP?
Do you have another Mac or access to one to see if it works on that?

Yeah I have BT turned on.
I just tried it on my wife's MacBook too. She has an identical trackpad which works fine, but this TP doesn't work on her MacBook either. I think it might actually be a fault with the trackpad.

I would guess that the BT module isn’t functioning anymore

Agreed, probably something with the Bluetooth or even the battery.

Does the Trackpad show the battery level on the Trackpad settings screen when it's plugged in? Or does it still click when it's pressed while it's unplugged?

The Trackpad doesn't physically click; it uses haptic engines to give the sensation that it clicks. So if it doesn't click when it's unplugged, then it doesn't have power or the battery is bad.

The battery seems ok. I think it's a bluetooth issue.
