Hey everyone,

I’ve been using the Magic Mouse for almost 2 years now, pretty much every day. After all this time, the battery still holds up surprisingly well - it drains about 5% per day, which gives me around 15-20 days of use per charge.

I’ve always tried to keep the charge between 20% and 80%, since it’s a lithium-ion battery, and I feel like that’s helped extend its lifespan.

But lately I’ve started thinking about the future. In a few more years, I’ll probably reach the point where it won’t even last a full day on a charge. And honestly, I don’t want to pay Apple again just for another Magic Mouse.

So I’m considering getting a Magic Trackpad instead - I like the idea that I can just plug it in via cable and basically use it forever without worrying about battery health.

What do you guys think? Anyone switched from the Magic Mouse to the Trackpad long-term? Was it worth it?

I have both. Having used mouses for decades now, I still can't get used to the Trackpad the same way. Click and drag just doesn't feel the same on the trackpad, let alone selecting. It's not as precise, but it's just me. I use the trackpad as a a very nice complement the the Magic Mouse, but I couldn't imagine it as a replacement.

I went to an Apple Store and tried the Magic Trackpad and was sold on it instantly. Three-finger drag (which I think is an option, rather than default) doesn't take long to get used to. And it's the identical experience as using a laptop.

Mine is nearly seven years old, used daily, and I get at least a few weeks of use with it...about half of what it used to be brand new. I charge it when the low battery notification appears or when it dies, and I charge it to 100%. I think you'll have many years left for yours, especially if you start using its full battery capacity instead of limiting yourself to 60%. It’s too early to be thinking about replacing it now, IMO. Don't obsess over the battery and get a new Magic Mouse or Trackpad when you need to.

Similar experience here. I thought I'd like the Trackpad because I love it on my MBP, but it's a totally different experience when I'm using the standalone version on my desk. Functionally, they are the same; but ergonomically, they are not. I hardly use mine anymore and just reach for the one on my MBP when I want to use the Trackpad for something quick.

With the built-in one on the MBP, it's below the keyboard and level with the case/keyboard, so it's comfortable to use when I'm on the go. I can rest my hand on the side while using the trackpad. With the standalone version, I've had it to the right of my external keyboard, and the trackpad is raised...so I feel like I have to twist and bend my wrist up when using it, and it gets uncomfortable after a while. If it could be flat/level with the desk, I think it'd be much easier to use, but that's probably just me.

I know some people say the Magic Mouse isn't ergonomic either, but I disagree somewhat. When I use the mouse, my wrist rests on my desk in its natural slanted position; I don't grip or palm the mouse, or twist my hand/wrist so that it's flat like some people do.
