Magic trackpad with M1 MBA

I just bought a M1 MBA and love it but I'm having a problem with the magic trackpad. I bought a new magic trackpad 2 for use at work and that works fine but the original magic trackpad I've had for years doesn't connect to the new MBA. I want to use it at but when I turn it on it doesn't show up in the bluetooth devices and there's no pop up window for connecting.

Any ideas? Is it not compatible with the new macs? My previous computer was a 2013 mBA and it still works fine with that.

I just tested a Magic Trackpad (I think it is ver 1) I use for my 2018 Mac mini, and it doesn't list on my M1 MBA.

The original Magic Trackpad had Bluetooth v 2.0... may not be compatible with Bluetooth v 5.0 in the M1 MacBook Air...
