I got the iPhone 12 pro this Friday, and I bought a MagSafe charger along with it.

I have experienced that the MagSafe charger is extremely slow, even though I use the right 15w adapter. As an example, I just charged it for 5 hours, and the phone only got to 65%. Am I the only one having this issue?

From what I’ve seen you have to use the Apple ONLY 20w brick with the MagSafe to get fast charging.

Here’s a video that explains it.

That's a good question and i have been wondering if you only get maximum charging efficiency with the magsafe charger, if you use the Apple 20w charging brick and charge without a case on
I’m starting to suspect this is the case. Even with an official Apple MagSafe case

How fast does the MagSafe with the Apple ONLY 20w brick charge?

I have my MagSafe charger plugged into my 97W MBP brick and it's still extremely slow. I'm talking 1% per 2 hours, and the phone gets extremely hot. This is charing flush against the phone, no case. There's clearly something wrong.

I have to say, if some of the videos I've seen, such as the one macher posted, really are true then I'm actually really pissed off. I have a XS right now, but I was considering buying the MagSafe charger to have for when I upgrade next year. I figured I would get 7.5W now, and then get a nice boost next year. But what I've seen is that some people are getting charging rates in the 0.5W-2.5W range with any iPhone that isn't a 12. That's complete and utter garbage, and Apple deserves to be raked over the coals if this turns out to be true. It would also give me serious pause when considering future Apple devices.

ETA: Also, for Apple to stand up and talk about how much they care about the environment but then ship a product that basically will force everyone to throw out all their old chargers if they want to get the best performance (i.e. charging times) is just plain insulting. All of this is just a giant money grab.

I know my 5w Anker chargers get hot with my 11 Pro Max (haven't tried them with my 12 Pro yet). I was curious if the 15w MagSafe would have some form of mitigation for this but ... this is my biggest gripe with wireless charging - heat.

I'm beginning to think that there might be a big batch of badly manufactured MagSafes. Because some are reporting horrible charging speeds and some are reporting great speeds and they are using the same exact setup. (phone, cable, charger etc.) And I don't think it's software because some Android users using the advertised Qi method are also reporting problems. I should get mine next week. Can't wait to try it out. Here's hoping this all gets fixed soon because something is obviously wrong!

My MagSafe took an hour to charge from 85% to 100%. Surprised at how slow it is. I'm using the proper 20W brick. Apple leather MagSafe case on.

Glad my 12 Pro Max has crazy great battery life, but I'll probably use the lightning cable for most charging. At night I slow charge on a Qi puck, which works just fine.

Doesn’t it switch to trickle charge when its above a certain amount, meaning that your slow hour would be normal?

Yes... the downside (I mean yay good battery?) is that I haven't drained the battery low enough in two days yet to time a faster charge from like 30% to 75% or so. Definitely for that last 15%, I'd probably have gone much faster just plugging in.

I used the 90w and 30w Ravpower PD3.0 usb-c... one puck is so hot (on both charger) and the second puck is semi-hot... I think like someone said these batches might be defected. The charging speed is fast for me, but the heat it generates on the pucks are very uncomfortable and scary! I may return all three of the pucks and just use a regular QI wireless...

Now I wonder if it’s going be the same issues with the MagSafe Duo... I was thinking of buying it for traveling purposes... but if it overheat... then definitely won’t be keeping it.
