This was a word experience.
Last night I’m MagSafe (apple made) charging my mini. Woke up and touch the phone and it was scorching hot to the point it’s was 73% and the screen was on, but it wasn’t charging at all while the phone was connected to MagSafe. I’m assuming it stopped charging to protect the phone. The phone was so hot it was uncomfortable to hold. I took it off the charger and it cooled down pretty quicker but I didn’t charge it again overnight. I’m using a 20w apple charger. Anyway thoughts, opinions.

I had a similar experience. I have three pucks, all of which used to get really hot prior to the iOS 14.4 update. I believe they tweaked the charging profiles, as my iPhone 12 mini now gets barely warm instead of uncomfortably hot.

I had several similar experiences with my 12 Pro. Woke up and couldn’t get back to bed, the Pro was struggling to charge (86%) and it was BURNING hot to the touch and couldn’t do normal brightness.

Had another experience where even after the 12 Pro was 100%, it became super hot to the touch with the MagSafe.

That was enough for me to never use it again. I’ll take wired charging for now.

My wife and mother in law use MagSafe and they haven’t had issues with it - but I’m not sure if they’d notice if they did.

@GuilleA - glad to hear.

I wouldn't use a MagSafe charger with the phones. In my opinion, it can't and shouldn't be trusted. What you described has happened numerous times with users. Many users have had scorched MagSafes from charging overnight. It could lead to killing the device or starting a fire.

I use Qi charging. I am not in a hurry most times to charge my phone.

I wouldn’t go so far to saying not be trusted. If it’s going to make phones catch on fire we’d have heard about it by now. 15w charging with no fan will be hot

I would rather ere on the side of caution with something as serious, than advise someone do something I wouldn't do. I would hate to have that on my conscience if something happened.

My point being it’s not a knockoff product. Apple would have tested it appropriately, and in any case. Fires would’ve happened, i have not seen any cases reported, and hell this place would be lit up if MagSafe fire gate was a thing.
not using one of the flagship features of a phone for “fire risk” is stupid.

Used to happen when phone was new, I have not noticed phone burning anymore. I have stopped using MagSafe, and use only the duo. Which means not using the phone while charging, could explain the heat.

The phone should not get so hot that it can't be touched due to getting burned, not to mention damage to the phone. In my opinion, that kind of heat is not normal.

Agree.
Even using wired 18W and 10W charger warms up my phone. I only use 5W now. Fast enough on the Mini.
While Qi charging only allow 7,5W on the iPhones, I started to think it’s a good option.

I am happy with my 7.5w Qi charger. My phone doesn't get hot like many other people's phones. I think that will help with premature aging of the battery.
