My apologies beforehand for all the following "NEWBIE" inquiries!
1. I have just created a maiden backup of my MacBook Air running MacOS High Sierra using Time Machine to a WD My Passport for Mac (4TB). The backup completed in 40 minutes but then the Encryption process began and after 3+ hours was still less than 1% complete!!

Googled this issue and implemented the following: <https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-backup-taking-so-long.1210173/#post-24898102 > "gavin-t" / August 14/17 and August 19/17;
" I waited about 24 hours for 13% of my new drive to encrypt. I wanted a faster solution.

The answer to this question seems to be here, but it's not all in one place. Here's how I fixed the "slow encryption" issue.

a) assuming you've got a new drive, or even a new partition for your backup and no information you need to keep on the drive.

do the following:

0. Open Disk Utility and unmount the disk.

1. Click the "erase button" and re-format the drive as a Journaled, Encrypted Volume. (takes only a couple mins) > NOTE; mine actually required just over 1 minute!!

2. Go back into Time machine Preferences and start a new backup on the drive. All of the "encryption time" will be removed and you're just backing up the information.

I wasted hours "waiting" for the encryption, but with the few small steps above solved the problem. "

RESULT: After following the above, this "second"/follow up backup required 29 minutes but when the Time Machine screen was showing about 5GB and 5 minutes remaining it suddenly offered the announcement that the process was complete!! And also during the "second" backup process, the Drive icon (My Passport for Mac) at the top right corner of the desktop screen had changed colour from Green to Gold/Yellow!!

SO!! Have I done the right thing here? Any and all input/direction/commentary is welcomed.

2. I was unsure/nervous about the proper procedure to SAFELY REMOVE the external drive: but I went ahead and right-clicked the Drive icon and the option "EJECT". I then unplugged the Drive cable connecting to my MacBook Air. Was this the correct and safest way to perform the removal of the Drive?

3. Is there a process available to VERIFY / VALIDATE the backup that was created?

4. Is it possible to restore a single or selected files only from a backup?

5. Where can I find the proper procedure to restore a complete backup?

As stated at the outset, apologies for this long list/post but I'm just trying to do things the RIGHT WAY with my new MacBook Air !!

Any and ALL input/instruction/commentary is greatly appreciated!!
