Mail 3.0 downloading thousands of emails from public folders??

I have my Mail 3.0 set up with my schools exchange account. However, there is a "public" folder that has tons of subfolders for each department that keeps continuously downloading lump sums of 1000+ emails from way back. Entourage doesn't do this, but I don't want to use entourage.

Anyone know how to remove folders like this? It won't let me straight up delete the folder (right click and then delete). I just want to simply check and send emails from MY inbox
