Mail account duplication?

Directly above the center of the Earth.
I was wondering if it was necessary to have both the mac/MobileMe IMAP account and/or the Me/MobileMe Exchange IMAP activated in my Mail/Preferences/Accounts? Are they one and the same or do they have different functions?
