Mail went a bit cock- eyed on me yesterday. Sent 70 copies of the one email (with cc & bcc) to a client - feel sorry for them and rather embarrassing for me. I quit Mail and it refused to open after that. Had to reboot to get it working again. I am very new to Mac (first one) - has this happened to anyone else?

I can honestly say I have never come across that, and I've been using Mail.app more or less since the very beginning. You were quite unlucky with this experience!
Hah I doubt it! Unless you made a script to send 70 times! Maybe it's worth deleting the mail account(s) and readding, just to be safe..
