Mail and GMail threading

I thought i would give mac mail a try for the first time.

I'm using it with a couple of gmail accounts and neither of them are threading the sent mail as part of the conversation. I.e. if i receive an email and send a reply the reply doesn't show in the thread and i can receive a response and even then the mail i sent before the response doesn't show up.

Any ideas or is this how mac mail works?

to clarify, i'm using imap with gmail
