Mail.app address book IM email association

In the Address Book, I have contacts whos IM details I've inputted. Most of them use Hotmail, which means their IM is the same as their email address, however Mail.app doesn't recognize this information as email.

Is there anything I can do? It would seem silly to have the exact same information twice.

You'll need to enter it in both the IM field and the email field.

That sucks - Mail should be smarter than that. Does anyone know of an AppleScript that might be able to do this automatically?
