Mail.app alternatives

I'm considering trying out something else besides Apple Mail. It's great application and all but I miss few features.

1. It doesn't send any notifications when the app is closed (I'd love to have menubar icon that would check new mail without Mail.app running).
2. Gmail tags - this is a big one. I use tags a lot and this way, Mail creates double entries in different folders because it can't deal with tags as Gmail does.
This is somewhat solved by MailTags but still...

I have used Sparrow Lite and it's all good and great BUT the mail messages do not get picked up by spotlight which sucks because I use spotlight for quick searching.

Are there any other cool programs to choose from?

Sparrow is considered by many as the new king.

Yes I am very happy with Sparrow, once they add Spotlight indexing it will be great app.

For now, I run Mail.app every week or so to have new mail downloaded and indexed but it's a workaround.

Postbox is good as well as Thunderbird.

I like postbox myself and recommend that as well
