mail app and read receipt requests crashing message?

it seems like every time i get a message from a friend of mine, it takes very long to open the message, and then another while for me to be able to type in
text after i hit reply. and then before i can finish the sentence, it closes the mail app. the only thing i can figure is that my friend has read receipt request turned on. so if i were to read his email in a normal email app like outlook, it prompts me if i want to send a read receipt or not.

does anyone else have this problem? if not, i don't know why the mail app would crash like that.
