Mail app. doesn'tSend...

MacAir Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Mail version 4.6.

All of a sudden the Send icon does not activate and therefore new emails cannot be sent. I've used various email addresses. Nothing works. Other icons on customized tool bar function OK. Any suggestions ? Thanks.
