Mail app eating 100%+ cpu

Once I open the mail app, it consumes 100% or above of my CPU. Fans would kick in and the mail app freezes. Anyone else having this problem or have any solutions to this? I'm on a 2012 Macbook Air btw.
 
I've had this happen a couple of times before, never thought much into it. Hopefully someone can chime in.
