this started just yesterday. when i launch Mail.app, it comes up, grabs a few emails, then hangs before it can completely launch.

right now, it's hung on "Erasing deleted mail older than 7 days".

before, it hung up on trying to count unread messages in the Sent folder.

it hangs the entire machine, Force Quit doesn't even work. i have to disconnect the battery (yikes) and restart.

i've tried, to no avail:
- resetting permissions
- running Disk Warrior

so i deleted the preferences. when i launch it now, i get a bunch of "things are locked" messages:
The mailbox "~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Outbox.mbox" is currently locked by "<a ton of garbage characters>". If you open a mailbox that already is in use, you may damage its contents."

<Open Read Only> <Quit> <Open Anyway>
anyone know how to unlock these mailboxes? i'm not at all unafraid of the command line.

i have no patience for such problems.

i forged ahead, re-setting up my email accounts, clicking "Open Anyway" when asked, and rebuilding the boxes.

i've got 10 accounts, and one particular one made Mail.app, and my ibook, hang. so i trashed its mailboxes.

it all works now.
