On The Nickel, over there....
Mail app is using 3GB of memory and 85%-95% of the processes are Mail. It won't quit nice, it has to be force quit every time. It seems to be hung up on updating the "Sent" mail; the spinning gear next to it never stops.
I've checked its preferences and everything looks good.
If I delete Mail from my Apps, is there someplace I can re-download it? At Apple? Off my SL install disk? I am clueless here.

Look in your users /Library/Mail folder.
The /Application/Mail is not the issue and hasn't not to be reinstalled.

Did you try to send a big file?

I would move all account related files out of /Library/Mail and start Mail again.
If everything is fine then, the bug is in the account.
Then I would create a new one and carefully import my backed up archive folders. By carefully I mean one by one.

I took the files out. Mail still didn't cooperate.
I may let it run overnight tonight and see if it completes any tasks it is trying to do.
