Mail.app message viewing issue

Ok, this will sound really dumb, and I apologize.

Usually, when using Apple's mail.app, I click my message once and it displays in the bottom half of the window. Today, it didn't work. I now need to double click the message to open in a new window, and I don't want that.

I've dug through the settings, and am stumped.

Help, anyone?

You've closed the preview pane. You should be able to see a narrow white bar at the bottom of the main window (below the listing of mailbox contents). Double-click it.
