Mail app not deleting/emptying trash - ever

OK, so I only started using mac mail app a couple of years ago and I only use it for business stuff, which is small, so I get almost no junk and a small flow of incoming emails.

Anyway, I notice I have 400+ items in the trash can, so instinctively I R click & 'erase deleted items'. Nothing. No warning, no spinning wheel, it just asks me if I want to delete the trash Items, but when I click yes, it does nothing.

I jumped on Google and found a few threads saying rebuild the mailbox. Did that. Nothing. Restarted, you guessed it - nothing.

It just seems to ignore my request completely.

Any help?

What are you mail server settings? Is the mail you are trying to delete a local mailbox or a server mailbox? Many server based systems can have some delay built in to protect users from their own stupidity

Alternatively, did you select the mail messages in your trash folder before you select the delete messages function?
