Mail app not working after reinstall of OS 10.6.3

I had to reinstall OS 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) - the only operating system ever used on my MBP. Now the mail app does not work. I can send but not receive mail. How do I fix this?

Open the activity window in mail and see what happens when it tries to gather mail from the server. My guess is your incoming mail settings are wrong. I would double check them.

No. That' not it. I tried that and all the settings are as they should be.
