Mail App - Organize by threads

In regards to the Mail App, I have always had the setting: "Organize By Thread" turned on.

I experimented and turned this off to see how this appeared with the threaded messages not grouped.

I then went and turned the "Organize By Thread" back on. However when I go view my email messages they will no longer regroup (with the little blue > arrow). I tried restarting the phone, but it did not help. (and also toggling off/on the "Organize By Thread" option in Settings)

Does anyone know how to fix this?

iPhone 14PM and running iOS 17.7
