Mail app popping up taking over half screen when watching video's

Hi all,

I the last month or so I have noticed a very irritating thing which occuring when I have the mail app open in the background and I receive an email while full screening Netflix, YouTube, SquashTV (just about anything) the Mail app takes over half the screen and presents the new email to me.

I find this behaviour very irritating and invasive and I was wondering whether anyone else has encountered this behaviour and know's how to solve it?

I am running the most up to date version of MacOS Catalina 10.15.4. I have checked all the Mail settings that could be impacting this.

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciate! thanks in advance.

i noticed this, too. sometimes the mail app is closed (not hidden), and it starts by itself and pops up. could't find anything in particular that triggers this behaviour.
Running catalina 10.15.4 on an 27 inch late 2013 imac
