I searched around, but this forum is so wide-ranging, that I got a bit overwhelmed. So apologies if this has been hit upon before.
On my iPad Pro (3rd gen), I encounter a relatively consistent bug that when I open up a PDF within the app, I may not be able to click the "Done" button on the top left to close out and return to the actual message. This necessitates killing the app to be able to regain access to Mail.
A few more facts and circumstances:
In any event, it is annoying and seems like something that would have been fixed over the last few years. Yet it remains. Anyone else experiencing anything like this? Thanks.

A few more facts and circumstances:
- This has been happening for a long time across various iPad Pros and iOS versions (including 12.2 now)
- It may be connected to also having a draft email in process. The reason why I think this may be the case is because I'm usually annoyed and worried that my work in a draft is lost (but thankfully the drafts are almost always preserved through the app termination and reopening)
- It often seems this is connected with me switching between apps to look at something I need to review related to that PDF before coming back to it
