Mail.app showing double unread messages on Exchange

I connect to my own Exchange server using Mail.app. Don't suggest I switch to Entourage, as it's horrible I used the Exchange profile when setting up my mail account and everything works fine, but when the number of unread items shows up beside my mail folders it's usually double the number of actual unread messages.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Also I understood that the Outlook Web Access setting was so that you could still check your mail when not on the same network as the Exchange server, but this doesn't seem to work for me. Do you need to enable anything for this to work?

I get the same problem occasionally on my IMAP account but it's not terribly often and restarting the app fixes it.

Unfortunately this has carried on across three OS X installs, so I'm inclined to think it won't be fixed by an app restart
