Firstly I set up Sierra brand new and the mail.app is absolutely useless.

Ok so I decided to clear out some mail. First I had around 30MB used space as reflected by local mail storage and iCloud mail storage. After trashing around 200+ mails and moving it to trash and then clearing it, I "get account info" in the sidebar and guess what its showing me the exact same mail count as I had before deleting it. WTF?

So I close mail and re-open it again no go...

After searching I go to mail, mailbox & "erase deleted items" and select iCloud and its magically fixed.

So selecting mail in trash and clicking delete doesn't seem to delete it at all even though its removed from the mail.app. I can't be possibly going to mailbox & erase deleted items all the time...

Now I have around 5 emails in my inbox. Yes 5 emails only. And I look at local storage and it says 5.8MB used. So I would assume iCloud storage is exactly the same but guess what... it shows 10.8MB used!!!

So I told myself give it a few days it might clear... its been 2 weeks and its stuck as 10.8MB despite me getting new mail over the course of the 2 weeks.

So I decide to test this out.

I sent myself a 9.8MB attachment to see if this would jumpstart the mail issue.

And true enough my local storage now shows 21MB and so does include mail storage. OK So we're back to normal now.

I delete the mail with the large attachment in mail.app and again the problems starts.

Again even though Ive moved it to trash and cleared it, the local usage is still 21MB even though the email is gone from mail.app, iOS and cloud.

Again I have to manually click menubar, mailbox, erase deleted items and then local storage is updated

However cloud storage now is showing 13.MB. So my question is where did this 3MB additional come from?

Now I try this again but completely remove mail.app

I shut down mail.app

I sent to my account again a large 9MB email.

However I access it via iCloud email.

I open iCloud storage and it shows as (13+9 = 22MB)

now I delete in iCloud and clear trash there as well, I look at iCloud storage and the entire 9mb is gone.

What I'm getting too is that deleting mail seems to work fine in iCloud. However the process of deleting mail via the mail.app completely messes up the entire thing.

As to how I can recover my "used" iCloud mail storage I have no idea
