Mail.app won't sync with iPhone or server

trying to sort out an issue on my girlfriend's macbook pro..

for me, it's always been: get a new email, delete it on my macbook, and it deletes itself from my iphone's inbox and the inbox on gmail.com. same the other way, delete it on my iphone, and it's not in my mail.app inbox anymore or on the gmail inbox.

this doesn't happen with her. she gets an email, deletes it from her mail.app inbox, and it's still marked as unread on her iphone and in gmail. if she gets to it on her iphone first and reads or deletes it, it'll be reflected in gmail but still marked as unread in mail.app.

so essentially she's having to deal with each email she gets twice.

since her iphone seems to sync with the server fine, i've been looking through mail.app's prefs to try to find a fix, but can't.

please help! the solution might be under my nose but i can't figure it out...

I am also having this problem recently. It is strange though because they always used to sync fine before. I haven't changed any settings but the problem has just appeared recently.

In the Mail preferences, was the gmail account configured as POP or IMAP?
