Mail Archive in OS X

Hi.
In Mail , What is the purpose of an Archive ?
Why do I need it ?
How can I remove it from Mail if I decide not to use it ?
PS's :
1. I'm using also Gmail in the Apple's Mail ...
2. I think it is kind of Duplicate messages if I don't remove from server ...
What is your recomendation to decide regarding Archive preferences ?
(I have a CrashPlan Backup solution in case of catastrophe ... )
