mail can't add hotmail account

Hi,
I am having problems accessing my hotmail account from mail, accessing from hotmail website works fine. On mackbook pro 2010 running el capitan (10.11.16). Tried deleting hotmail account and now can't add hotmail account back to mail. 2 step verification is turned off in hotmail. Not sure how to resolve this. Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Thank you.

Try setting it up as a Microsoft Exchange account. Had the same problem when I had it set up as a regular IMAP account. Was using Google and got the idea to set it up as an Exchange account. Works fine now...even with an app password, since I have two-factor authentication on.
