Mail: Change "Mark As Read" Settings?

I'm trying to change the settings in my Mail so that a message isn't automatically marked as read as soon as I click on it. I remember from an older version being able to change that, but now on my new laptop I can't find where to change the settings in Preferences. Did they disable that feature, or am I just lacking observational skills?

Mine does what you want, but I can't find a preference for it. Sorry, that's not a lot of help is it?

In the message preview pane, drag the separator between the message list and preview pane to the bottom of the window. When you select an unread message it remains unread. Hope this helps!
