Mail crashes when opening an email with images

My father's iMac started crashing (or freezing) Mail whenever you click on an email that includes inlined images. Regular text or HTML mail causes no issues (nor do attachments), but any message with images in it blows up Mail. I have tried killing preferences, pulled in a copy of Mail from Time Machine back when everything was working OK, etc. Nothing helps. This is with 10.5.6

Any ideas? We are getting very frustrated.
