Mail crashing on G4 Powerbook

For no apparent reason my mail program has started to crash seconds after it opens. Everything else on my Mac seems to be as normal. The Mac is an older 15" titanium powerbook and I'm running system 10.2.8.
I've tried various tips that I read on this forum, but nothing has worked.
Has anyone had the same problem, and if so did you come up with a solution?

I had this problem when someone emailed me a picture that was a JPEG in the format that Preview complains about when opening it. (Something to do with interlacing or something.) If the email that Mail tries to bring up has an image in it, try deleting it real fast before it has a chance to display.
