Mail doesn't check for new messages/locks up

So I've been having a kind of weird issue the past couple months. I have an iPhone 4 with 4 or so email addresses set up in Mail.app, either push or pull every 15 minutes.

Every once in a while, I notice that I haven't gotten any new messages. I open mail and it will say that it hasn't checked for a few hours. The app will promptly crash, relaunch and it will actually receive email.

So, what's going on here? Why is Mail failing to receive mail and crashing? How should I go about resolving this?
