Mail eats RAM

On occasions, Mail eats all the available RAM. On my imac I have 8 GB and within 10 minutes all used up. In the past I have been able to fix this by deleting mail but this does not seem to work any more (or at least without me having to delete mails I need to keep). The problem is on more than one machine so reloading mail is not the solution.

I have seen the problem in forums but not seen any permanent fix. Does anybody have a solution?
