Mail file size

Ok I have a file (a legal MP3 of our own Band) on my mac that i emailed to a friend. It says 7 MB in the Finder but when i email it, Mail says that it is 9.6 MB.

Can Anyone explain this?

The Mail protocol is very old indeed. To send messages they have to be encoded (uuencoding normally). This may well increase the file size.
