Mail fonts

I just upgraded to Catalina on my iMac desktop. The font preferences I had set in Mojave are gone, and I can't change it back in Mail preferences. It shows the fonts that I have selected in the preference part, but does not change the fonts back in actual Mail. It seems stuck on the default font. Is there a way to fix this?
