Mail help needed

Hello...
I've been accessing several of my email accounts using Mail while at work. I'd like to remove all but one of these accounts as well as the old messages. I know I can remove the accounts from the Mail preferences, but what do I need to do to delete all the old mail? I suspect simply deleting it from Mail's inbox isn't really deleting it, but I could be wrong about that.

Yes deleting a mail from the mailbox means that you move it to the trash. But when you delete it from the trash then you delete it for ever.
